Geoff James - An amazing Life!

Recalling the life and times of Geoff James who was striken with Muscular Dystrophy in his early teens and was bedridden from the age of fifteen, but in spite of such adversity lived an amazingly full life and played such an important part in the life of our community here in Hartland.

 

Our President's Story

A presentation based on our Society President, Rev. Fred Pennington's autobiography, 'From Ploughboy to Priest', up-dated and illustrated with photographs. Alas, since the committee organised the programme, Fed has reluctantly had to give up his own home here in Hartland, just prior to his 94th birthday, and is now living with his family. We are sincerely hoping he will still be able to come and join us from time to time.

 

The Story of Berry Farm

With this ancient and historic farmhouse having been recently sold to new owners, Stephen Hobbs has been tracing its history and its place in the life of Hartland. A set of buildings with a very interesting story to tell.

 

Farming Past and Present

Recalling an earlier presentation given to the Society by Rev. Fred Pennington of life on a Hartland farm a hundred years ago, we will also be hearing of farming in 2006 with present day Hartland farmers.

The North Devon A.O.N.B.

Our guest speaker will be Janine Holbert of the North Devon A.O.N.B. As Volunteer Co-Ordinator Janine supports and promotes the areas importance by working closely with local communities, and recruiting volunteers to aid in data collection, such as fixed post photography work, hedgerow condition and ground nesting bird surveys. She is resposible for the A.O.N.B. team's day to day running, organising events and conferences and providing information abour the work of the unit.

 

A Members' Dinner

As it is thirty years since the Hartland Society was formed in 1976, we are organising a special dinner for members in the Parish Hall. Our after-dinner speaker will be North Devon historian, Mr Peter Christie. More details about this event nearer the time - but we are planning a three-course meal, with a choice of menu.
