The Tithe Computation list for Hartland 1846

This is the complete list of names of owners and tenants; holding, field name; field usage; field number (on Tithe Map)
It does not show field sizes or the remaining detail. This list contains 4500 entries and is divided into sections:
Surnames = A-B(1) ; B(2) ; B(3) ; B(4) ; C ; D ; E-G ; H ; I-M ; N-R ; S-Z by land owner surname. Each page contains c.500 records.

The Tithe Survey was undertaken in 1846 and two known maps were provided. One was the property of the Church at Hartland, a Second was lodged with the Tithe Commissioners. The Church copy was displayed in the Parish School for a period of time and then disappeared. It was later claimed as Parish property and was stored in the loft of a cow shed for a further period. Later it went to a Parish Clerk who recognised it and it was deposited at the North Devon Records Office. A copy of the Map and computation Book are available on CD from Hartland Digital Archive. The Map is some fifteen feet square and apart from some damage on its leading edge is in good condition.

The Survey computation shows the owner of the land by field/plot, who the tenant is, if there is one, the name of the farm. holding, the name of the field, the use the field was put to at the survey, the filed number and the filed size by acre. As would be expected the holding within the parish of HArtland was heavily weighted towards the primary estate and this is show in the chart below. In total some 4500 identifiable pieces of land are recorded and of these just short of two thousand belonged to Lewis William Buck of Hartland Abbey or his direct family.
