HARTLAND DIGITAL ARCHIVE - Newspaper & Data searches .

We have aimed to keep these searches as open as possible, so the results will depend on the search phrase entered. The Keyword search is conducted on the full content of the articles, therefore the result returned will indicate that your Keyword is within the article at some point.
Searches are also variable on the original content, as the editor(s) were not always consistent in punctuation, grammar, parish locations etc therefore there will be some variance in the results gained.

KEYWORD (s): This can be any single word that you require, but as the search is open on the content then it is worth remembering that you can restrict the search by some simple actions. As an example if you enter 'ship' as a Keyword then the results returned will include articles that contain those four letters in that order so you would get ship, shipping, friendship, worship etc By placing a line space after ship 'ship ' then the search would return such as ship, friendship, worship but not such as shipping etc. Again by placing a line space both before and after ship ' ship ' then only entries with the word ship will be returned. You can use this on any Keyword.

PARISH: Generally each database entry has an identified parish, but as said above editors were not consistent in applying this and also changed over the years. In general the parishes within the database are: Hartland, Clovelly, Welcombe, Morwenstow, Kilkhampton, Lundy, Woolsery, Parkham, Buckland Brewer, Alwington, Bradworthy, District, (note that Bucks Cross can come under Woolsery). If in doubt leave blank and then it will return results without being filtered by parish, but you would get a longer list to work through. In the earlier days often no parish was mentioned and by default these are entered under Hartland. ONLY enter one parish per search.

YEARS: You can restrict the period of a search by entering two year dates. If no dates are entered the search will cover all entries by default as it is set to run from 1800 and to 2050. If you wish to restrict the period then enter your chosen period i.e Year 1; 1889 Year 2; 1910

SEARCH RESULT: A search will return a table of result to match you search terms. This table will have four columns: Details link: ID: Title: Year. The details link when clicked will open the full article with available references. The ID is our internal reference. The title is the article title - these are very general and can hide an interesting story so don't be put off by a simplistic title have a look. The Year is the year of publication.
